This week sees the end of the academic year in our local schools; I have the privilege of being part of the leavers’ services, which are all emotional, especially for those who are leaving the comfort of the school they have known – some for a number of years – and moving on to a new school in September. They will of course say “goodbye” to some people, but hopefully will make some new friends in the school they move on to. It can be quite traumatic and daunting as they move from a rural school where they know most people, including staff, to a situation where they will know relatively few people, at least for the first few weeks.
Nearly all people have a small amount of fear when moving to a new situation: whether that be to a new home in a new village, a new job or some other new environment. It is a natural emotion or reaction to something that is unknown, to have some reservations about the new situation that we may find ourselves in.
Some people feel the same about coming into church for the first time: will I know what to do, and when to do it, as we stand for some parts of the service and not for others? In our churches we hold various types of services: from the formal – services of Holy Communion; to the very informal – our Café style worship or family worship. We welcome newcomers and you will always receive a warm welcome whether or not it is hot or cold outside, and after most services we enjoy a cup of tea and a biscuit. We’d love to see you, please come and join us as we worship God together.
