Summer is here, the weather has changed and soon we will all be looking forward to the school holidays. The trees, plants and grass have turned into various shades of green, getting lighter or darker depending on the amount of rainfall. I can recall long hot days in my childhood, but so many things have changed – not least the pace of life. Nowadays, the expectations of the summer holidays have grown: families and children expect so much more with visits to theme parks and other activities which challenge the bank account.
In all of this, sometimes it is the simple things that matter the most, like walks in the countryside, or spending time at the playground with a picnic and perhaps a visit to the beach; there is so much around to enjoy without spending mega amounts of money. I know it is difficult to satisfy the needs and wants, but by the same token it is important to acknowledge the beauty of nature and to teach children to respect and care for what we have in God’s creation.
On my recent walk with the camera, I could hear the birdsong of many different species, but it was difficult to see the birds to take a picture. It reminded me that we see lots around us but we don’t always understand their origins or acknowledge for ourselves the wonder of creation, the seasons that come and go in order for it all to happen and give thanks to God for all he has given us in creation – its beauty, its wonder and the food it gives us to sustain our bodies. There is so much to explore, discover and learn as we live our lives each day.
