If we think about the nativity story, then in these few days before Christmas, Mary and Joseph would be currently on their journey to Bethlehem to register in the town of Joseph’s birth. Mary being heavy with child would have found the journey quite harrowing, not knowing when her baby would be born or if the movement of the journey would make any difference to her unborn child. I’m guessing that Joseph was feeling the stress too, as pregnant Mary rode while he walked alongside leading the beast along the dusty paths.
Many people will be travelling this Christmastide, as they visit family and friends both on Christmas Day and the following days. We of course don’t know what the weather will be like on the roads, but whatever the weather they won’t be easy journeys. No doubt there will be a number of road closures, diversions and roadworks that will add to the hazards. Similarly, the railways will be busy and with a few line closures to enable upgrades to track and signalling circuits.
I hope that those of you who are travelling will have a safe, comfortable journey that runs to time – and God willing, no accidents or breakdowns. There are some tough, difficult journeys mentioned in the Bible; and not all had a good outcome. Wherever you go, whatever you do, I pray that you reach your destination and that the outcome will be as you wish it to be. And ultimately, on your life’s journey, I pray that you will find peace, happiness and the true meaning of Christmas as we celebrate the birth of Jesus, the Saviour of the world.
May I wish you God’s blessing for Advent and the coming season of Christmas.
