Graham’s Weekly Message

Last week I referred in my message to the dull and dreary days, and this week as I write we have a bright sunny, but cold day. Nonetheless with the sun shining it lifts the spirit, and most people who I have passed this morning have commented on the sun and its ability to put a spring in people’s step. It does make a difference to everyone, even the wildlife. As I walked through the churchyard at Great Barford the birds were singing sweetly in the trees and I encountered some chaffinches and a beautiful Jay just foraging around in the undergrowth for whatever he could find; presumably to eat.

Everything looks brighter when it is highlighted by a light source like the sunshine; I hope this week’s photograph of a mallard shows this aspect of light. We live in a world where there is a lot of darkness, and there are any number of places and situations that could be helped with the shining of a light on its problems and difficulties. We see in the media lots of events, peoples and nations whose problems are the result of darkness overcoming the light, and trying to extinguish it.

In the Christian church we believe that 2000+ years ago Jesus came as the Light of the world; indeed he proclaimed himself as the Light of the World. As his followers, we too are called to be lights that shine in the darkness of this world. I hope that as we feel the warmth of the sunshine on our faces we are able to be lights in the world and shine wherever we go.

With God’s love and blessings.
