Graham’s Weekly Message

We are approaching the season of remembrance; not only Remembrance Day itself on 10th November, but in the Church we also recognise the feast day of All Souls. It comes two days after what is commonly called Hallowe’en, so on the nearest Sunday we hold a service, sometimes called a Memorial Service, when we have the opportunity to remember in particular those who have passed away in the previous twelve months, but is also for anyone who has lost someone close to them. We provide the opportunity to light a candle in memory of that person, and we remember them in our prayers. This year, our All Souls Service takes place in Blunham church at 4pm on Sunday 3rd November; everyone is welcome to join us for this short service of remembering.

More widely observed is Remembrance Sunday which falls a week later on 10th November. Each of our four churches will have an Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial, followed by the remainder of the service in church (more details below). Again, you would be very welcome to join us on that day of national remembrance.

There are many people who wear their Poppy with pride, and you can also spot poppy badges which contain special commemorative symbols, usually because they have some connection with their family. It is important that we remember those who gave their all so that we might live a life of relative freedom. Perhaps more importantly, that we learn the lessons of past conflicts, and particularly what led into them in the first place. Whilst we remember, I hope that governments and people of authority strive for peace across the world which we inhabit. Current conflicts are distressing as we see the death and destruction, sometimes shown live on the media, that are the results of many different reasons, but my prayer is that wisdom and justice will prevail so that all may live in peace and safety.

With love, prayers and God’s blessing.
