Have you been watching the Olympics? I have to admit that I have not watched as much of it as I usually do. But from what I have seen there have been some memorable performances, not only from British athletes, but athletes from all nations. I particularly watched the final of the men’s pole vault, and the winner was not only able to win the gold medal, but also to break his own world record: vaulting 6.25m – well done to Sweden’s Armand Duplantis. What impressed me most was the support of the other pole vault contestants as they cheered him on to break the world record. The companionship and “family-like” support was evident as he made that giant leap over the bar.
As fierce as the competition was to be in first place, the other athletes recognised the achievement of this technically difficult sport. As we go through life we face some difficult challenges along the way, and to have the support of family, friends and neighbours is so important. In the Bible we are encouraged to “run the race before us, striving to be the best that we can be”. Any athlete or sportsperson will tell you, that to have the support of the crowd makes a lot of difference to your performance. As we run the race of life and discipleship, let us support one another as we strive to be the best that we can be. It doesn’t always need to be a grand gesture of support, but sometimes it is just a kind word, a generous act or being a listening ear that can be the support that someone needs at that moment in time. I pray that you will find it in yourself to be there for family, friend or neighbour.
With love and prayers
