I write this week’s message whilst reflecting on the events of yesterday in Southport: the passing of three children and the injuries of nine others from being stabbed. I understand that the police have arrested a 17 year old in connection with the incident. No motive has been established at this moment in time, but hopefully this will become clear as time moves on. I don’t know about you, but I struggle to understand the reason why someone should feel compelled to carry out such an atrocity. What is it within a person’s mind that triggers the need to take human life, and in such a way as by using a knife?
Whenever an event like this happens, it is always reassuring to see the community rally round in support of those who have suffered. Sometimes it is the floral tributes that accumulate that show that the community cares, or the offers of practical support that can be as simple as a listening ear. I would hope that we would all rally round if something of this nature occurred within our communities.
Jesus during his three short years of ministry showed that we all need to care, support and love one another: no matter what tradition, background or culture. Our love for each other is important, both in the sad events as well as the times of celebration. I hope you will join me in praying for those who have lost their lives, those who are injured, and those who have been affected by this tragic event. One news report told us that a poem of hope had been left at the scene; may we all hope for recovery, reconciliation, healing and hope for the future; that such tragic events become a thing of the past; and that society learns to live alongside each other without fear and trepidation.
With love and prayers Revd Graham
