For most schools this is the last week of term, and I will have had two school leavers services; these services are sad and yet happy occasions both at the same time. Sad because those who are leaving are saying farewell to something they know, feel comfortable with –and where they can be at the head of the school being the oldest children. They are also happy and exciting times as the children remember the good times they have shared, but now they are moving on to something that is new and perhaps daunting. We hope they will make new friends and embark on the next exciting chapter of life’s journey of learning.
I reminded the children that it is important that, not only they, but we all continue to learn as we grow each and every day. No one, without exception, knows everything so it is important that we don’t close off our minds thinking that we do, but that we need to continue to soak up information, and that we experience as much as we can in order to become better people.
It is the same for disciples of Jesus Christ; it’s important that we continue to study and learn about the way of life we are called to as we try and follow the ways of Jesus. No one knows everything, and we all need to learn and discover by way of studying the Bible, praying and joining together with others in Christian worship.
We think not only about those leaving school, and students leaving university, but also all who are about to move on to pastures new – moving house, those getting married, those starting a new job. All of these will need to learn and become familiar with their new surroundings, change of schedules, or perhaps a different commute every morning. We ask for God’s blessing on all of them, as they take another step into the future.
With God’s Blessing
